How to Find Your Purpose: Trusting and Following Your Dharma

In a world that constantly bombards us with images of success and tells us how we should live, it can be easy to lose sight of our own path—our Dharma.

In yoga, Dharma represents our soul's purpose, the unique path we are meant to walk in this lifetime. A way of living that not only supports your good, but the greater good. And yet, It's also deeply personal and soul-guided, often unconventional, and won't always align with what others expect of us.

But that’s precisely where the power of Dharma lies.

I’m sharing this today because I recently took a significant leap in living out my own dharma by purchasing a yoga studio, located just 15 minutes from downtown Nashville. It was a decision that felt deeply guided, even though it wasn’t the obvious or easy choice—more details about that will come later.

Discovering Your True Purpose: The deeper lesson of trusting your path, even when it doesn't look like anyone else's.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “How do I find my purpose in life?” you’re not alone.

Many people struggle with understanding their life’s direction, searching for clarity on what their true calling is. In yoga psychology, we refer to this practice as Svadhyaya, or self-study—a process of looking within to discover who you truly are and what you are meant to experience or create.

Svadhyaya teaches us to be nourished by the wisdom that already exists within our soul — listening to and being guided by the deep, inherent knowledge we carry inside. This approach helps us align with our true selves and our life's purpose.

It’s easy to get lost in comparison, to look at others and wonder if you’re on the right path. But remember, your purpose is uniquely yours. The Yoga Sutras teach us to practice Vairagya, or non-attachment, which helps us let go of the need for external validation and instead, trust our own inner wisdom.

How to Know Your Purpose

Finding your purpose often starts with a deep sense of dissatisfaction or restlessness—an inner nudge that tells you there’s more to life than what you’re currently experiencing.

If you’re Googling “What is my true calling?” or “How do I know my purpose?” you might be feeling this pull. This is the first step on the path of Dharma—acknowledging that your soul is calling you to something greater.

Steps to Finding Your Purpose Requires Getting Quiet and Looking Within

Practice Self-Reflection: Spend time in meditation or journaling. Ask yourself, “What brings me joy? What makes me feel alive?” These are often clues to your true purpose.

Listen to Your Inner Voice: Often, we ignore our inner guidance because it doesn’t align with what others expect of us. Tapas—the inner fire—reminds us to have the discipline to follow our heart, even when it’s difficult.

Let Go of Comparison: One of the biggest obstacles to finding your purpose is the tendency to compare yourself to others. Santosha—contentment—comes from within, from living in alignment with your Dharma, not from measuring yourself against others.

Take Inspired Action: Even when you’re not sure of the entire path, taking small steps can lead you closer to your purpose. Trust the process and know that every action you take with intention brings you closer to living your truth.

Trusting Your Path and Building Faith

For me, purchasing the yoga studio wasn’t about following a conventional path of success by societal standards. It was about trusting my Dharma, embracing the uncertainty, and taking inspired action, because it felt right in my heart and body.

Ask yourself: “Am I living in alignment with my purpose? What step can I take today that moves me closer to my true calling?”

Remember, don’t let the noise of the world drown out the voice of your soul. Trusting your path, requires building faith in the unseen, which is your own inner guidance system.

Because the biggest secret of all is that everything you need to feel and be happy, confident, fulfilled and free is already within you—waiting to be remembered.

The Dharma Codes

If you're looking for more support and guidance in finding your true purpose, my self-paced program, "The Dharma Codes" offers deep guidance into unlocking your life's path.

Dharma Codes will help you find your true purpose in life. Discovering your dharma requires that you go back home to your internal wisdom and listen to it. Because it is only by going inward that you can really live your one precious life in alignment with your deepest truth.

Too often we chase something just because we see someone else doing it or because society has deemed it "successful" ~ and think we need to do that too. But that will only lead you to feeling lost. In a world trying to make you like everyone else, the dharma codes will show you how to find yourself and your unique life purpose.
